The story of Watermelon Socks: Many of you have asked what the story is behind the song and CD title, Watermelon Socks. With the help of my friend, Margaret Phillips, I want to share with you how it all came about. I had written many songs for children and had toiled with the idea to share them with my coworkers in an upcoming Professional Development Day for teachers. My close friend Margaret, a Speech Pathologist, was quite encouraging and supportive. One cold , rainy day in the Fall of 2005, we had a lengthy discussion in the parking lot after one of our district teacher meetings. We talked about many things…jobs, interests, hopes, and family. Margaret began sharing about her daughter Maureen, her loves and sweet personality. Maureen's life was short, just 2 years old when she passed away, though she took quite a bite out of life! Margaret shared that Maureen loved wearing her little watermelon socks. "Maureen would tug off her watermelon socks and then tip over from the effort. She thought that was BIG FUN." During our talk, I remember sharing with Margaret how great of a title (Watermelon Socks) that would be for 'something' ~ We smiled at the thought and both seemed to know that this was the beginning of something so meaningful and joyful. Within 30 minutes, the song Watermelon Socks came to life. It's a song about life, joy, and remembrance. It's about memories and the beauty that lies within them. It's about hope, love and purpose. It's about remembering to take the biggest, juiciest, sweetest bite out of life that we possibly can! |
